This last Saturday I had the pleasure of celebrating our
friend Heather’s 30th birthday with her and her sister Tiffany. For her big day, Heather decided she wanted a
“Glam Day” where we could get all dolled up and take pictures. Heather lives in
San Luis Obispo, but drove up to San Jose to spend the day with us girls. I don’t often get to have a girls day because
“my girls” are scattered across different cities and states and I am always
happy to find other people to do girly things with. Tom is usually a willing participant in most
everything I want to do, but something you just really need your girls!
We started the day off at Sephora, where we had our makeup
professionally done. I always enjoying
have other (more skilled) people do my makeup.
I wouldn’t say I’m a makeup novice, but I definitely do not spend the
time or energy on my daily beauty regime to get the results that professional
makeup artists do. I especially love the
look of fake eyelashes and it something that I only do as a “treat”. Heather had created beautiful vintage glamour
invitations that she sent to us and wanted her makeup to reflect a vintage
look. Tiffany also selected a smokey-eyed
peacock look that went well with the theme.
Being preggo, I have a pretty limited wardrobe and ended up wearing a
light colored sundress. My makeup artist
wanted to play up the coral color in my dress and went with a less dramatic pink/coral
look.
After make-up, we headed over to Santana Row to get our hair
done at Aveda. Since my hair has gotten longer I have been wearing it curly
more often. I wanted my hairdresser to
give me a cut that would emphasize my curls but that would still look good when
I wore it straight. She ended up
re-shaping my layers quite a bit and my hair feels a lot shorter, even though
it’s really not. I’m still getting used
to it but I think I like it. It takes me
a while to warm up to a new cut. Heather
went for a cut and color and Tiffany had her hair cut and blown out.
At this point, we were all feeling pretty glamorous but starving,
so we ended up eating lunch at Pasta Pomadoro. This Saturday just happened to
be Cinco de Mayo and Santa Row was crammed with people enjoying the festivities
and dancing (and margaritas!). We
grabbed a table outside and the sun and the music made the day feel even more
festive. After lunch we walked around
the Row and Heather took photos of us at various places among the strip.
The photos turned out great and I love the preggo shots of me. Heather is a wonderful artist and she has a great eye for fun and unique backgrounds. If you were looking at the photos she took, you wouldn’t be able to tell that we were at a shopping center. You can check out her work at http://www.heathermillenaar.com. You will still see our wedding photos on her website among her other great work. We are planning on having Heather take photos at our baby shower as well as more maternity photos and newborn shots of the soon to be Baby J. If you are in the SLO area and need a great photographer, Heather is wonderful!
We had a blast and it just reminds me of the power of good friends and taking the time to indulge in yourself. It’s so easy for me to get wrapped up in the day-to-day, especially now that we have so much to do before July. You can very easily never have the time or money or energy to do so. I won’t say it’s a resolution, but I do vow to take more time to treat myself on the completely unnecessary from time to time. Even if it’s just frozen yogurt.
